Today is the birthday of Astrud Gilberto, the iconic and undisputed Queen of Bossa Nova. The portrait above and her portrait on the musical reference work / birthday calendar below are made by me, Frieke.

Astrud Gilberto was born as Astrud Evangelina Weinert on March 29, 1940, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. There, at a young age, she meets the nine years older Brazilian musician João Gilberto, whom she marries in 1959 and has two children with. João Gilberto is the creator of the bossa nova music style, a genre that emerged in Brazil in the late 1950s and early 1960s.Gilberto became globally known for her iconic rendition of the song The girl from Ipanema. (in Portuguese: "Garota de Ipanema"). This song, written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, became a major hit in 1964 when performed by Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz. Her soft, sensual voice and relaxed singing style contributed to the success of the song, helping it become one of the most recognizable bossa nova songs in the world. It sold over one million singles in the United States alone. After this success, Astrud released album after album of enchanting bossa nova songs sung in various languages, including The Astrud Gilberto Album  and  Beach Samba.

In addition to her musical career, Astrud Gilberto has also had some acting roles, and in 1990, Astrud started her own music publishing company, Gregmar Productions, with her two sons Marcelo and Gregory. Astrud frequently performs and sings duets with famous stars such as Michael Franks, Etienne Daho, George Michael, and Frank Sinatra, with whom she sings the posthumous duet "Fly Me To The Moon." Her songs have been covered by famous singers such as Shirley Bassey, Petula Clark, Sade, Sinéad O'Connor, Basia, and Suzanne Vega.

Astrud Gilberto ended her musical career in 2001 and turned to her greatest hobby, painting. Due to her significant contributions to Latin American music, Astrud has been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. Since then, little has been heard from her.

"And when I'm gone, don't worry 'bout me: I got places to go, people to see..."
