David Robert Jones was born on 8 January 1947 in Brixton, London. At the age of fifteen, his left eye was damaged during a scuffle with his friend George Underwood. As a result of the injury, his pupil could no longer respond to changes in light, and the iris took on a brownish color that clearly differed from that of his right eye. This would become one of his trademarks.

The young David Jones sang and played saxophone in blues bands. He wrote You've Got a Habit of Leaving , which was released as a 7-inch single under the name Davy Jones & The Lower Third. This was the last time the name David Jones appeared in music history. He took the name Bowie from the Texan frontiersman Colonel James Bowie.

Bowie’s musical career spanned several decades, during which he experimented with a wide range of genres, including rock, pop, electronic music, and the avant-garde. Some of his most famous albums include Space Oddity (1969), The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972), Heroes (1977), en Let's Dance (1983).  His musical style evolved constantly, ranging from glam rock and art rock to soul, funk, electronic, and experimental music.

Bowie was known for adopting various alter egos throughout his career, such as Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, and the Thin White Duke. Each persona was accompanied by a distinctive musical style and visual aesthetic. He was also a pioneer in the use of music videos as an art form. Videos such as Space Oddity, Ashes to Ashes, and Let’s Dance often featured creative and visually striking elements. In addition to his musical career, Bowie was also active as an actor. He appeared in films such as The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), Labyrinth (1986), The Prestige (2006), and Furyo (1983).

On 7 December 2015, the musical Lazarus premiered in New York, directed by Belgian director Ivo van Hove. A separate CD/LP features the four compositions Bowie wrote and recorded especially for Lazarus: No Plan, Killing a Little Time, When I Met You , and the original version of Lazarus..

David Bowie died on 10 January 2016 from complications related to cancer. A few days earlier, on 8 January, his 69th birthday, he released his final album, Blackstar. This album marked the end of an era and left a significant void in the music world. His legacy continues to inspire fans around the globe.
