Joan Armatrading was born on 9 December 1950 in Basseterre, Saint Kitts (an island in the Caribbean Sea), and grew up in Birmingham, England. Her musical career began in the early 1970s, and she broke through in 1976 with her album Joan Armatrading.
This album brought her into the mainstream and featured the hit Love and Affection, which marked her first international breakthrough. The album also earned her a Grammy nomination.
In addition to her self-titled album, Armatrading released several influential records, including Show Some Emotion (1977), To the Limit (1978), and The Key (1983).
One of her later albums, Lovers Speak (2003), featured a mix of new songs and re-recordings of earlier work. The album was well received and demonstrated that Armatrading remained a relevant force in the music scene. These albums represent only part of Joan Armatrading’s extensive discography. Her music evolved over the years, yet she consistently maintained her ability to combine profound lyrics with a diverse musical approach. On 11 May 2018, Armatrading appeared on The Graham Norton Show, where she performed her latest single, Like It When We're Together.
