Joe Pass was an American jazz guitarist, born on January 13, 1929, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Pass began playing the guitar at a young age, encouraged by his father, an Italian immigrant with a passion for music. Fascinated by bebop, he moved to New York at the age of 20. Unfortunately, during this period Pass fell into drug addiction. For more than ten years, until the early 1960s, he struggled with substance abuse. He was arrested several times before eventually being admitted to Synanon, a rehabilitation center for people with drug addictions. During his stay there, Pass recorded an album with a group of fellow residents: Sounds of Synanon (1962). Jazz critics were highly enthusiastic about Pass’s guitar playing.

After overcoming his addiction, Joe Pass built a successful solo career and released numerous albums. One of his most remarkable solo recordings is the album Virtuoso (1973). In addition to his solo work, Pass collaborated with many well-known jazz musicians. For example, he worked extensively with pianist Oscar Peterson on several albums; The Trio, featuring Pass, Oscar Peterson, and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, won a Grammy Award.

Joe Pass was renowned for his virtuosic technique and masterful command of jazz harmony. He was able to create solo guitar improvisations that sounded like complete arrangements. His style incorporated elements of bebop, swing, and mainstream jazz.

Joe Pass died of cancer on May 23, 1994, at the age of 65. He is remembered as a master guitarist who made an invaluable contribution to the development of the jazz guitar.
